Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
