At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
